    Overview: 

    Symbiont utilized state funding to perform a waste to energy feasibility study for a paperboard mill.  The study maximized the use of matching funds to identify capital and operations cost of wastewater pretreatment to generate renewable energy.

    Overview: 

    A recycle paper mill in Wisconsin selected Symbiont to provide engineering design services for a high rate anaerobic pretreatment system for their mill.  The pretreatment system will significantly reduce the organic content in the effluent discharged to the municipal sewer and lower sewer cost.  The pretreatment process consists of wastewater cooling, pre-acidification, and a fluidized bed anaerobic reactor.  This treatment process was selected to fit in the small area available on site.

    Overview: 
    • Treats 120,000 gal of high strength wastes
    • Generates 2.0 MW of electricity
    • Generates 7.7 million BTU per hour of heat
    Results: 

    Symbiont developed a design-build partnership with the FCPC to develop a regional waste-to-energy facility. The facility collects wastes from over ten food processing facilities. Anaerobic digesters treat the organics to generate biogas. The biogas is then used in two internal combustion engines to generate green energy. The heat is captured and transferred to the FCPC casino.

    • Turnkey wastewater pretreatment facility
    • Two-phase anaerobic digester
    • Three Biogas utilization methods including microturbines to generate electricity
    Results: 

    Symbiont used 3D modeling to design a two phase anaerobic digester to biologically treat waste streams such as yeast without screening. This process will reduce the volume of solids disposed offsite and will increase the volume of biogas produced. The biogas is then used in microturbines to generate electricity, while excess is used in a boiler to heat the digester and also to generate steam for the brewery.

    Results: 

    Symbiont designed and constructed a two phase anaerobic digester at the existing wastewater treatment facility. The process maximizes loading rates and protects the bacteria by isolating the acetogens from the methanogens. The anaerobic effluent is discharged  to the existing aerobic treatment process. Biogas is dried and compressed for use in electrical generation with mircoturbines.

    • Treats 300,000 gallons of high strength wastes
    • Generates 3.2 MW of electricity
    • Generates 362 million BTU per day heat
    Results: 

    Two 2,000,000 gallon anaerobic upflow contact digesters treat the organics to generate biogas. The anaerobic effluent is treated with a moving bed aerobic bioreactor and discharged to the city sewer. Biogas is filtered, dehumidified, compressed, then burned to generate green energy. Heat is transferred to the food processing facilities.
