    Results: 

    Symbiont provided design-build services to support the installation of a new aseptic filler line in an existing production facility. Building modification design included equipment supports, conveyor supports, and hose stations to accommodate a new packaging area. Demolition drawings for modifications to the existing walls, doors, and concrete slab were produced. New design elements included slab design and incorporating conveyor, new drains, a sump pit, walls and openings, and code review for egress requirements. Utility systems modification design included electrical power distribution, low voltage power distribution, hot water, compressed air, steam, condensate, chilled water, nitrogen, softened water, and plant water.

    Symbiont provided engineering and construction work to relocate an existing fiberglass lamination line to a new building. Relocation required extensive modifications to existing building floors and walls to construct five new rooms. Facility upgrades included a new HVAC system and extensive electrical work for power distribution, receptacles, process line lighting and new HVAC system. Total production downtime was minimal; approximately one month.

    Symbiont provided process, electrical, and instrumentation design modifications to increase the brand flexibility of an existing Milwaukee brewery. Design modifications to process and utility piping included: beer transfer, steam and condensate, compressed air, instrument air, ambient process water, hot process water, CIP supply and return, fermented beer, CO2 vent, tank counter-pressure, and carbon dioxide gas.

    To assist the City of Watertown's Engineering Department with a sidewalk capital improvement project, Symbiont performed a Geographic Analysis Study using distributed and weighted variables to prioritize areas for potential sidewalk construction. Outcomes from Symbiont's analysis were used to quantitatively rank which future sidewalks would have the highest impact on the community as well as visually communicate proposed sidewalk locations to the City's decision makers.

    Symbiont is participating in a 5 year $1M USEPA grant being led by the University of Louisville. Collaborating with team members on gathering and integrating Brownfields data, Symbiont is measuring Brownfields redevelopment impact on social, economic, and environmental benefits. Symbiont is also working to ensure that the GIS database Community Benefits Tool serves the needs of area wide grantees.

    The City of Racine's previous GIS viewer was difficult to maintain and update. The system lacked intuitiveness and cross-platform compatibility. Using ESRI’s WebApp Builder for ArcGIS (Developer Edition), Symbiont developed a new GIS application designed to meet the needs of all City departments. Symbiont refined the overall presentation of asset mapping with improved cartography and custom basemap features.

    Symbiont simplified forestry operations for the City of Watertown by implementing a Tree Inventory Data Collection Application for the City's forestry staff using Collector for ArcGIS. In 2016, the City collected information about more than 4500 trees throughout the city using the Collector application. Currently, forestry staff are using the tree inventory application for documenting all forestry maintenance operations, resulting in improved record keeping and reporting.

This project was undertaken as part of providing the Coalition with an interactive and dynamic mapping tool which is currently being used to spur redevelopment using data driven strategies.

    Symbiont provided city-wide utility GPS mapping services for the City of Fort Atkinson using RTK Sub-Centimeter GPS units and ArcGIS Collector apps. In a time-frame of less than three weeks, Symbiont surveyed over 6,500 sanitary, storm, and water assets owned by the City. This utility GPS mapping provided the City with high-accuracy horizontal coordinate and vertical elevation information thus improving mapping and geometric connectivity.

    Symbiont partnered with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and Miller Brewing Company to demonstrate the effectiveness of a rain garden/bioretention swale for storm water runoff control.  The project consists of a rain garden and bioretention swale designed to capture, slow, and treat overland runoff from an industrial parking lot and storage yard.

    Symbiont designed a new public works street garage facility to expand the City’s adjacent wastewater treatment plant.  The estimated $4.5 million street garage complex includes a new building with a 25,800 square foot vehicle storage garage and a 6,300 square foot office area, as well as remodeling a 20,700 square foot warehouse building on-site for additional storage.

    Results: 

    The new street garage building obtained LEED certification by the US Green Building Council.  The building design includes numerous sustainable concepts including a geothermal heating and ventilation system, recycled materials, green storm water management, and sustainable building materials.

    A recycle paper mill in Wisconsin selected Symbiont to provide engineering design services for a high rate anaerobic pretreatment system for their mill.  The pretreatment system will significantly reduce the organic content in the effluent discharged to the municipal sewer and lower sewer cost.  The pretreatment process consists of wastewater cooling, pre-acidification, and a fluidized bed anaerobic reactor.  This treatment process was selected to fit in the small area available on site.

    Symbiont worked with the City of Racine to implement their USEPA Community-Wide Brownfield Assessment Grant. Target brownfield sites were identified and assessed to facilitate cleanup, closure, and redevelopment of properties.

    Results: 

    Centrifuges are used in the brewing process to increase throughput and decrease production time. The capacity of a centrifuge varies depending on the yeast load of the fermenter. When fermented beer with high yeast loads ran through the existing system, the throughput was reduced as the actual capacity of the centrifuges was reduced.

    Symbiont led evaluation and design of improvements to several water reclamation facility systems. Upgrades addressed the effluent pumping network to avoid pressure drops. Existing tunnel lighting was updated and chlorine contact basin sluice gates were replaced. Modifications were made to the boiler system to reduce the potential for low CO levels.

    Symbiont led a multi-firm team to design pump station and conveyance system improvements to address flow increases and aging infrastructure. This included expansion of a wet well, an increase in existing influent sewer storage, evaluation of alternative pump combinations, backup emergency power generators, and ventilation improvements.

    Symbiont provided services for a new wet weather treatment facility; a key asset in the City’s LTCP for control of CSO’s. This facility includes 265 MGD of screening and pumping, 90 MGD of clarification, chlorine disinfection, and solids handling.

    Results: 

    New facility began operation in June, 2014, ahead of the negotiated schedule with USEPA.

    Symbiont provided services to replace 24 belt filter presses. Symbiont evaluated the existing infrastructure to determine if client should rehabilitate or replace considering capital, O&M, schedule, construction constraints and process performance.

    Results: 

    Client selected new presses. Symbiont completed bid documents within the project schedule and budget. Equipment is exceeding client expectations.

    Symbiont created bidding documents for disposal of dredged sediment, developed stage/discharge capability of the existing outlet structures, and evaluated modifications that increased discharge ability. We performed all hydraulic modeling for the existing pond and discharge structures, and added modifications to match the increase inflow-pumping rate.

    Symbiont developed a design-build partnership with the FCPC to develop a regional waste-to-energy facility. The facility collects wastes from over ten food processing facilities. Anaerobic digesters treat the organics to generate biogas. The biogas is then used in two internal combustion engines to generate green energy. The heat is captured and transferred to the FCPC casino.

    Symbiont designed a facility to treat combined sewer overflow. Following completion of the preliminary design, the City retained Symbiont to complete a detailed design of the wet weather treatment system, which included screening, pumping, wet weather clarification, solids handling, and digester heating.

    Results: 

    Symbiont identified and performed five projects. Two managed flow between plants, three focused on providing inline storage in combined sewers, and one involved storing water in an abandoned interceptor. For the inline storage projects, innovative pinch valve technology allowed the city to regulate the amount of flow diverted, utilizing the capacity of the diverted flow to an interceptor to use its full capacity.

    Symbiont performed pre- and final design services for the new biosolids dewatering and odor control systems that reduce the volume of land-applied solids. The combination of operational improvements with selected capital investments are saving the city nearly $1,000,000 in capital expenditures while achieving estimated similar odor control reduction as purely capital improvements.

    Symbiont completed a CSO LTCP to take advantage of new State of Indiana compliance options. The 20-year LTCP plan contains four phases, each separated by a one-year monitoring period to assess the effectiveness of the construction projects. The final design of the facilities includes a wet weather pump station and fine screening methods.

    Symbiont used 3D modeling to design a two phase anaerobic digester to biologically treat waste streams such as yeast without screening. This process will reduce the volume of solids disposed offsite and will increase the volume of biogas produced. The biogas is then used in microturbines to generate electricity, while excess is used in a boiler to heat the digester and also to generate steam for the brewery.

    Symbiont designed and constructed a two phase anaerobic digester at the existing wastewater treatment facility. The process maximizes loading rates and protects the bacteria by isolating the acetogens from the methanogens. The anaerobic effluent is discharged  to the existing aerobic treatment process. Biogas is dried and compressed for use in electrical generation with mircoturbines.

    Two 2,000,000 gallon anaerobic upflow contact digesters treat the organics to generate biogas. The anaerobic effluent is treated with a moving bed aerobic bioreactor and discharged to the city sewer. Biogas is filtered, dehumidified, compressed, then burned to generate green energy. Heat is transferred to the food processing facilities.

    Symbiont used D/B to upgrade the mixing capacity in the equalization tanks to reduce the impact of chemicals on the downstream-activated sludge process. Online sensors were added for real time data, and existing activated sludge process was reconfigured. An aerobic digester was modified, the aeration diffusers were replaced, and blower plug in and controls rebuilt to minimize energy use. Continuously backwashing sand filters were added to reduce total phosphorus in effluent.

    Pepsi Beverages was in need of new wastewater pH treatment systems to ensure compliance with local sewer permits at several facilities. Each system includes self-contained wastewater pH neutralization skid, equalization tank, lift station, and effluent monitoring. The enclosure on the tank allows for a weather tight space to house the features.

    Symbiont designed and constructed the expansion of an existing wastewater treatment plan in order to treat flows from the world's largest cheese production facilities. To maintain production capabilities, the upgrade was completed during routine operations of the existing plant. Symbiont developed a unique high rate activated sludge process for this application. This included tie-ins to existing facilities, power connections, and redevelopment of a new controls system.
